We are seeking two experienced and driven Senior Structural Engineers to join our growing team - one based in Nottingham and the other in Sheffield.
The most suitable candidate will be a chartered structural engineer (IStructE preferred, ICE considered), or working towards, with extensive technical knowledge of structural engineering and experience delivering both new build and refurbishment projects in a range of sectors, for project values ranging up to in excess of £15m.
As a Senior Structural Engineer at Dice, you will be responsible for the management and technical delivery of your own portfolio of exciting projects including education, healthcare, residential, industrial, commercial, leisure and retail schemes. Your Role
- Supervise and mentor junior members of staff, offering pro-active advice in relation to problem solving issues.
- Assist with the development and implementation of Quality Systems associated with all structural projects.
- Typically leading the technical delivery of up to 4-5 projects concurrently.
- Manage both personal time and other resources, and attend resource meetings prepared with a summary of upcoming project requirements.
- Development of fee proposals & bids.
- Nurturing and maintaining new and existing client relationships, and securing repeat business.
- Supporting other Dice disciplines with their pipeline by making referrals and identifying projects where other Dice disciplines could contribute, for example site investigations and pre-planning services.
- Assist with project budgets and ensure work is delivered on time and on budget.
- Complete quarterly reports and IPD requirements for chartership.
- Occasionally sharing knowledge with the rest of the team such as structures monthly team meeting CPD presentations.
- Other duties may occasionally be required to support the needs of the business.
Additional Duties
You will also be responsible for the the delivery of feasibility, preliminary and detailed engineering design including full tender and construction packages, with typical project specific responsibilities including:
- Act as Project Manager or Structural Lead, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.
- Managing all technical and where appropriate financial aspects of projects, including coordination with and reviewing deliverables by other Dice disciplines.
- Work closely with project technicians, ensuring they are fully briefed at the outset, attending relevant DTMs and liaising directly with the project team.
- Checking of reports, specifications, structural calculations, structural designs, and structural drawings. On some occasions, it may also be necessary for you to author reports, specifications and calculations.
- Develop concept designs and be actively involved with all projects under your management throughout all stages.
- Utilisation of various computer software programs which include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, Robot Structural Analysis and NBS Chorus.
- Maintain high technical standards consistent with the project design brief.
- Undertake site visits associated with inspections and / or site investigation works.
- Attendance at meetings with team, clients, and statutory approving bodies. Occasional requirement to attend meetings, public consultation events or planning committees outside of normal office hours.
- Consultation with clients, other staff members, and statutory bodies including Building Control, NHBC, Planning Authorities, Highway Authorities, Environment Agency, Statutory Undertakers etc.
- When required, review third party documents which are relevant to the structural design, such as fabricator’s details, ensuring that these are filed correctly with document review stamps. Or oversee and ensure that this is being completed by a junior engineer where appropriate.
- Ensure Dice QA procedures are followed including risk schedules and document registers kept up to date and saved correctly.
- Manage project change control and negotiate fee variations with clients.
- Undertake project cost control and compile project invoices.
- Arrange monthly project control meetings with the project director and implement any corrective actions where necessary.
Key Skills & Experience
- Educated to degree level in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or an equivalent subject and/or level, with a minimum 2:1.
- Minimum 4-5 years’ experience in a relevant structural engineering role.
- Either chartered, or a graduate member of the IStructE and actively working towards chartership status, with core objectives either fully signed off or at least 75% complete (ICE also considered).
- A dynamic work ethic and pro-active approach to problem solving.
- Experience delivering new build and refurbishment building structures projects in steel, concrete, timber and masonry across a variety of sectors.
- Possess excellent IT skills with proficiency in using spreadsheets and word software. Experience utilising other packages such as Tekla Structural Designer, Robot Structural Analysis and IdeaStatica would be advantageous.
- Able to meet deadlines with strong organisational skills and experience of leading the technical delivery of projects.
- Able to mentor junior engineers and technicians.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to represent the business at client and wider design meetings where required.
- Knowledge of the CDM Regulations and construction industry health and safety legislation.
