Dice Consulting Engineers are seeking an enthusiastic and driven individual to join our expanding team in the role of Associate Structural Engineer. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join our established senior leadership team and play a key role in growing the business within the Yorkshire market from our brand new Leeds office. The successful candidate will work closely with the Company Directors and will be fully supported in establishing and growing a structural engineering team in Leeds, whilst working closely with our existing teams in Sheffield and Nottingham. A realistic and supported route to Director will be provided to the successful candidate, subject to aspirations and performance.
The most suitable candidate will be a chartered structural engineer (IStructE preferred, ICE considered), with extensive technical knowledge of structural engineering and experience delivering both new build and refurbishment projects in a range of sectors, for project values ranging up to in excess of £15m. The individual will be equally comfortable in performing an outward facing business development role to maintain existing client relationships within the local market and generate new work streams.
The Associate Structural Engineer will be responsible for the commercial management and technical delivery of their own portfolio of exciting projects including education, healthcare, residential, industrial, commercial, leisure and retail schemes. Working alongside the Directors, the individual will be responsible for establishing, managing, and growing a team of talented structural engineers, implementing the ongoing business strategies, completing business development and other duties associated with leading the Leeds structural engineering team, whilst completing a technically focussed, project delivery role. The Role
- Establish and grow a team of structural engineers within the Leeds office and take responsibility for all aspects of the delivery of projects.
- Undertake and arrange effective mentoring, checking of work and supervision of employees under your direction.
- Undertake a lead role in the structural engineering design team and be responsible for all aspects of the delivery of projects.
- Responsibility for the delivery of feasibility, preliminary and detailed engineering design including full tender and construction packages.
- Act as Project Manager / Design Manager in this client facing role, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.
- Preparation / checking of reports, structural calculations, structural designs, and structural drawings.
- Develop concept designs and be actively involved with all projects under your management.
- Utilisation of various computer software programs which will include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Autodesk and more specialist software such as Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, Robot Structural Analysis and NBS Chorus.
- Maintaining high technical standards consistent with the project design brief.
- Knowledge of the CDM Regulations and construction industry health and safety is essential.
- Assist with the development and implementation of Quality Systems associated with all structural projects.
- Undertake site visits associated with inspections and/ or site investigation works.
- Attendance at meetings with team, clients, and statutory approving bodies. Occasional requirement to attend meetings, public consultation events or planning committees outside of normal office hours.
- Consultation with clients, other staff members, and statutory bodies including Building Control, NHBC, Planning Authorities, Highway Authorities, Environment Agency, Statutory Undertakers etc.
- Development of fee proposals & bids, and assist new project lead generation.
- Manage project change control and negotiate fee variations with clients.
- Undertake project cost control and compile project invoices.
- Nurturing and maintaining new and existing client relationships, and securing repeat business.
- Work closely with the company directors and senior leadership team to build new client relationships, maintain existing relationships and grow the business in accordance with our growth plans, with a personal emphasis on Leeds and the Yorkshire market.
- Contribute to resource planning, management meetings, marketing strategies and other strategic business planning and implementation along with the Directors and other members of the senior management team.
- Requirement to periodically travel to our other offices to remain in close contact with the full team (indicatively fortnightly – travel expenses covered by the business).
- Other duties as may occasionally be required to support the needs of the business.
Key Skills & Experience
- Educated to degree level in structural engineering, civil engineering or an equivalent subject and/or level.
- Chartered Engineer status with MIStructE or MICE along with relevant experience in delivering complex building engineering projects, commercial management of projects, management of staff and completing an outward facing client account leader role.
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in a relevant structural engineering role, however please note that candidates with less experience will also be considered for this vacancy should the correct skills and quality of experience be demonstrated.
- Ability to work independently and implement business strategies agreed with the company Directors.
- Ability to operate in an outward facing role, build relationships and generate new business.
- Strong experience delivering new build and refurbishment building structures projects in steel, concrete, timber and masonry across a variety of sectors. We are currently delivering projects ranging in construction value up to £70m. The successful candidate will be experienced working on projects of a range of value, size, and complexity.
- Experience and detailed knowledge designing to European and British codes of practice.
- Possess excellent IT skills with proficiency in Tekla Structural Designer and Tekla Tedds. Experience utilising other packages such as Revit, Robot Structural Analysis and AutoCAD would be advantageous.
- Able to meet deadlines with strong organisational skills and experience of leading the technical delivery of projects.
- Experienced leading multi-disciplinary teams, managing and mentoring staff.
- Experienced in the commercial management of projects and all other aspects of project delivery.
- Able Experienced in to mentoring other engineers and technicians.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to represent the business at client and wider design meetings, and as the face of Dice’s structural engineering presence in Leeds.
- Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively.
- Commercially aware and experienced in fulfilling responsibilities with regards CDM regulations and other health and safety requirements on projects.
- Self-driven and motivated to work closely with the existing leadership team to grow the business and progress in your own career.
