The redevelopment of Selston High School involved the transformation and modernisation of key educational facilities while the campus remained fully operational. Dice was appointed by Edge Property Services Ltd to deliver RIBA Stage 3 structural and civil engineering design services for the scheme.
The project included a new four-court sports hall, a courtyard infill extension, refurbishment of existing school buildings, and associated drainage and infrastructure upgrades. Working within a constrained live site required careful coordination across all disciplines to ensure buildability and minimise disruption to teaching activities.
Site Constraints and Technical Challenges
The project was delivered within a complex site environment, with several technical constraints influencing design development. These included unknown and ageing underground drainage networks requiring extensive investigation, coal mining risks beneath parts of the site, and limited structural information on existing buildings due to asbestos restrictions that delayed intrusive surveys.
Additional challenges included existing drainage defects and unidentified underground services, all of which required ongoing coordination and design adjustments throughout Stage 3.
Dice developed a coordinated structural and civil engineering solution to support the redevelopment, including:
- Structural design of a new steel-framed four-court sports hall with long-span portal frames
- Engineering for a courtyard infill extension, structurally separated to protect existing buildings
- Phased construction strategies to support future expansion and reduce disruption on a live campus
- Shallow foundation solutions informed by ground investigation and mining risk assessments
- Sustainable drainage design incorporating attenuation tanks, rain gardens and pumped systems in line with SuDS requirements
- Structural alterations to existing school buildings including new steelwork, lintels and roof modifications
- Stage 4 coordination planning for drainage, rooflights, steelwork and services integration
